Virginia Wesleyan baseball team denied upset of No. 3 Lynchburg

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Tyler Howlett hit a two-run single to cap a four-run ninth inning as No. 3 Lynchburg (22-4) rallied to a 5-4 victory over Virginia Wesleyan (6-12) on Wednesday in Virginia Beach.

Edgar Harwood hit a two-run homer and Ty James went 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles to lead the Marlins.

VMI 26, Norfolk State 6: Owen Prince went 4 for 5 with six RBIs and Kazuya Jordan went 4 for 4 with five RBIs as the Keydets (19-11) rolled past the Spartans (1-22) in Norfolk. Collin Curry went 4 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs for NSU.

Christopher Newport 9, Hampden-Sydney 6: Jake Benedict went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs and Jackson Baird pitched six strong innings as the Captains (16-11) won at home.

Virginia 11, Old Dominion 5 (late Tuesday): Aidan Teel hit a two-run homer and finished with three hits and four RBIs as the Cavaliers defeated the Monarchs in Charlottesville.

Eric Becker added four hits, two runs and an RBI for UVA (16-11), which has won four straight.

Kainen Jorge had two hits and two RBIs and Zach Leite added two hits, two runs and an RBI for ODU (8-18).

VCU 16, William & Mary 4 (late Tuesday): Sean Swenson drove in five runs, Will Henson hit a two-run homer and scored five runs and Nick Flores went 3 for 4 with a homer and four runs as VCU routed William & Mary 16-4 in Williamsburg.

Lucas Carmichael went 2 for 5 with a homer to lead the Tribe (10-18), which had its three-game win streak come to an end.

COLLEGE GYMNASTICS

W&M’s Tully a CGA All-American

William & Mary freshman Luke Tully has earned regular season All-America honors in the all-around by the College Gymnastics Association.

Tully ranked fifth nationally in all-around with a four-score average of 75.117. The Lebanon, Tennessee, native ranks third in the ECAC on high bar (13.333), fifth on floor (13.483) and ninth on vault (13.917).

  • William & Mary’s Ricky Pizem and Connor Barrow have earned weekly honors from the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Pizem garnered routine of the week distinction, while Barrow was the rookie of the week.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

CNU rolls to sweep of N.C. Wesleyan

Jamie Martin struck out 13 to improve to 10-1 and Kate Alger pitched four strong innings to move to 12-0 as No. 2 Christopher Newport (25-1) swept a doubleheader from North Carolina Wesleyan 7-1 and 10-1 on Wednesday in Newport News.

Virginia Wesleyan 5, Salisbury 2: Lauren Bible pitched a complete game to improve to 13-0 and Laci Campbell had two hits, two runs and an RBI to lead the Marlins (22-1-1) to a victory in the first game of a doubleheader. The teams played to a 4-4 tie in the second game.

East Carolina 6, Norfolk State 2: Annie Kate Dalton went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Kanisha Anderson had four hits and two runs as the Pirates (20-16) downed the Spartans (13-15) in Greenville, North Carolina. Emory Shorts had a hit, RBI and run for NSU.

  • New UVA basketball coach Ryan Odom has added assistant coaches Matt Henry, Bryce Crawford and Darius Theus to his staff. All three were with Odom at VCU.
  • Old Dominion women’s basketball players En’dya Buford, Brenda Fontana and Kelsey Thompson have been named to the CSC Academic All-District Team.
  • Virginia Tech forward Connor Serven has entered the transfer portal, according to multiple reports. He saw action in 16 games last season, but played only a total of 38 minutes.
  • James Madison guard Mark Freeman has entered the transfer portal, according to The Portal Report. He averaged 15.8 points a game this season.
  • Norfolk State women’s tennis player Sofiya Tsitavets picked up MEAC Rookie of the Week honors. She went went 3-1 in singles play and 5-0 in doubles during the week.
  • Old Dominion women’s tennis player Sofia Johnson has been named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week. The London native won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Victoria Matasova for a win at No. 1 doubles in a team victory over James Madison.
  • Four Old Dominion women’s swimmers have made the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team: Kiersten Donnelly, Kristilynn Mosley, Emma Seidel and Lauren Masters.
