BLACKSBURG — Amani Hansberry scored 19 points to lead Virginia Tech in a 94-59 rout over Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday night.
Hansberry led a dominant scoring effort for the Hokies’ starters, who poured in a combined 63 points. Hansberry was 7 of 13 from the field and had nine first-half points as the Hokies ran up a 47-27 lead at the break.
Virginia Tech (3-0) took the lead at the 16:10 mark of the first half at the start of 11-0 run and never relinquished the lead.
Neoklis Avdalas added 14 points, five rebounds and seven assists, along with a couple of blocks. Jaden Schutt added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench. Tyler Johnson, Tobi Lawal and Ben Hammond all had 11 points.
Deuce Jones led the Hawks (2-1) with 14 points off the bench, shooting 6 of 15 from the field. Jaiden Glover-Toscano, with 10 points, was the only other Hawk in double figures.
Saint Joseph’s turned the ball over 19 times after turning it over 17 times in its first two games, leading to 25 points for the Hokies. Virginia Tech had nine turnovers, allowing just four points from those errors.
Virginia Wesleyan 91, Apprentice School 63: Omari DeVeaux and Amari Moorer each scored 15 points to lead a balanced effort for the Marlins (2-1) in a nonconference win at home.
Ten players scored for VWU, which led from start to finish and took a 43-29 advantage into halftime.
Miles Hancock finished with nine points and 10 rebounds for the Marlins, while Jabari Brackett’s 20 points led the Builders.
No. 2 Randolph-Macon 71, No. 9 Christopher Newport 65: Jabril Robinson scored all 10 of his points in the second half and Keishawn Pulley Jr. finished with a team-high 15 points as the Yellow Jackets won a showdown of nationally ranked Division III teams in Newport News.
CNU twice pulled within one point during the second half, but couldn’t take the lead. R-MC (3-0) led by as many as nine points after the break, with Zyir Baskerville’s 3-pointer pulling CNU within the final margin with 39 seconds left.
Tyson Henderson led CNU (1-1) with 14 points, followed by Ethan Ward (11) and Baskerville (10).
No. 1 Houston 78, Oakland 45: Kingston Flemings had 19 points and nine assists, Emanuel Sharp scored 19 and the Cougars (3-0) won at home over the Golden Grizzlies (0-3) from Michigan.
No. 20 Tennessee 99, North Florida 66: J.P. Estrella scored a career-high 23 points along with 10 rebounds off the bench, and Ja’Kobi Gillespie had 21 points and seven assists for the Volunteers (3-0) in Knoxville. UNF (0-2), led by Kent Jackson’s 16 points, went the final 6:13 of the first half without scoring as Tennessee moved ahead 47-30.
VCU 78, Saint Peter’s 61: Tyrell Ward paced the Rams (2-1) with 15 points off of the bench, Terrence Hill Jr. scored 13 points and Barry Evans had 11 for VCU at Siegel Center.
Brent Bland finished with 25 points for the Peacocks (1-2), who trailed for the final 33 minutes.
Longwood 82, James Madison 72: The Lancers (2-1) made 36 of 42 free throws to beat the Dukes (2-2) in Farmville.
Five Lancers scored in double figures, as JMU transfer Redd Thompson Jr., Elijah Tucker, Jacoi Hutchinson and Johan Nziemi all had 12 points. Nzemi led Longwood with eight rebounds.
JMU’s Bradley Douglas led all players with 22 points and seven assists, but the Dukes couldn’t rally from a 20-point second-half deficit despite getting as close as seven.
NC State 110, UNC Greensboro 64: Darrion Williams erupted for 32 points and Paul McNeil Jr. scored 27 for the Wolfpack in Raleigh.
Williams shot 12 of 19 from the field and hit six 3-pointers, powering a Wolfpack offense that closed the night shooting 56% and 16 of 32 from deep. Quadir Copeland added 13 points and six assists, and former Hampton University player Jerry Deng had nine.
Donald Whitehead Jr. scored 21 for UNCG (0-3).
VMI 106, Virginia University of Lynchburg 54: Walker Andrews netted 29 points as the Keydets (3-1) routed the lower-level Dragons in Lexington.
Derek Todd scored 19 for VUL, which trailed just 40-35 at the half but was overwhelmed in the final 20 minutes. Linus Holmstrom scored 25 and Jaylen Pazon 20 for VMI, and Menchville High graduate AJ Clark had 20 rebounds, four assists and four points.
St. Mary’s 85, Regent 75: The Royals (0-1) dropped their season opener to the Seahawks (2-1) in St. Mary’s City, Maryland, despite Christian Brown’s 24 points and four steals and Brendan Goods’ 14 points.
Jake Koverman netted 18 points to lead four Seahawks in double figures.
Women’s basketball
Old Dominion 73, Delaware 66, OT: Simone Cunningham scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Simaru Fields added 19 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Monarchs outlasted the Blue Hens in overtime for a nonconference victory at Chartway Arena.
Four players scored for ODU as the Monarchs outscored Delaware 9-2 in the extra period. The Blue Hens missed 9 of 10 shots in overtime.
ODU trailed 34-26 at halftime, but scored 27 points in the third quarter to rally into the lead. The Monarchs forced 24 turnovers, turning them into 23 points on the other end.
ODU’s Kelsey Thompson finished with 14 points and nine boards.
No. 15 Duke 93, Norfolk State 32: Taina Mair scored 18 points, and the Blue Devils held Norfolk State to 16% shooting to coast to a victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Riley Nelson and Arianna Roberson both added 12 points off the bench for the Blue Devils (2-1), and Toby Fournier scored 10.
Anjanae Richardson scored 11 points to lead the Spartans (2-2) but was just 4-of-24 shooting.
The Blue Devils scored the first eight points and the last seven of the first quarter to take a 17-5 lead as the Spartans hit just 2 of 16 shots. Duke added a 16-2 run in the second quarter to push the lead to 38-16 at the half, with the visitors hitting 4 of 18 shots for 18%.
Richmond 84, William & Mary 58: Maggie Doogan scored a game-high 25 points and Rachel Ullstrom finished with 19 as the Spiders, who were in the AP Top 25 until they lost at Texas, cruised to a victory in Williamsburg.
Doogan was 8 of 13 from the floor, made 9 of 10 free throws and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Richmond (2-1) led 17-10 after the first quarter and pulled away for good with a 27-14 second quarter.
Cassidy Geddes led the Tribe (1-2) with 24 points.
Virginia Wesleyan 52, Methodist 44: Brianna Long scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Marlins picked up their second straight win to start the season.
VWU’s Bre Robinson (16 points) and Jaiden Hunter (10 points) also finished in double figures in the nonconference matchup.
The Marlins led 15-6 after the first quarter and never trailed against a Monarchs team playing its season opener.
No. 1 Connecticut 85, Loyola Chicago 31: KK Arnold and Sarah Strong had 11 points each for the Huskies (3-0) in Storrs. Azzi Fudd had nine points and five of the season-high 25 steals for UConn against the Ramblers (1-2).
No. 5 LSU 117, Charlotte 59: MiLaysia Fulwiley had 22 points and Mikaylah Williams 18 for LSU (4-0), which scored at least 100 for the the fourth consecutive game. The Tigers are averaging 114.5 points with a victory margin of 59.5 per game. Princess Anderson scored 27 points for the 49ers (2-2).
No. 6 Oklahoma 89, Kansas City 61: Aaliyah Chavez netted 29 points for the Sooners (3-0) against the Roos (1-2) in Norman. Oklahoma went ahead 47-33 by outscoring Kansas City 23-10 in the second quarter.
James Madison 74, Liberty 61: Lake Taylor High graduate Ashanti Barnes poured in 12 of her career-high 29 points in the fourth quarter for the Dukes (3-1), who overcame a 37-27 halftime deficit against the Flames (2-1) before 1,971 in Harrisonburg.
Barnes had 11 rebounds, and Princess Anne High alumna Zakiya Stephenson had eight points, eight assists and five steals.
Emmy Stout led Liberty with 16 points. The Flames outrebounded JMU 48-32 but committed 21 turnovers to the Dukes’ nine.
Apprentice 63, Patrick & Henry Community College 53: The Builders (2-1) won their home opener on Alumni Night as Ronnice Berry had 22 points and 11 rebounds to notch her second double-double of the season. Apprentice led the Patriots (1-3) of Martinsville by at least eight through the fourth quarter.
