Virginia Tech holds off Syracuse for ACC road triumph despite shaky finish

Ben Hammond scored 24 points, reserve Tobi Lawal recorded a double-double and Virginia Tech beat host Syracuse 76-74 Wednesday night.

Hammond made 12 of 13 foul shots, and Lawal scored 16 points, shot 10 of 14 from the free-throw line — including 4 of 4 in the final 32 seconds — and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Neoklis Avdalis and Amani Hansberry each scored 10 points for the Hokies (15-5, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who have won three of four.

J.J. Starling scored 12 points for Syracuse (12-7, 3-3). The Orange led 37-30 at halftime before Virginia Tech erased the deficit by outscoring Syracuse 16-8 in the first nine minutes of the second half to claim a 46-45 lead when Hammond made 1 of 2 foul shots.

Tech outscored the Orange 11-2 to move ahead 64-55. The Hokies led 68-59 before Syracuse pulled to 72-69. Nate Kingz missed a 3-point try that would’ve tied the game with 15 seconds left.

Lawal got an offensive rebound of a missed Avdalas free throw, then clinched the victory with a pair of free throws at the 5-second mark for a 76-71 edge.

No. 22 North Carolina 91, Notre Dame 69: Caleb Wilson had 22 points while frontcourt mate Henri Veesaar added a double-double in Chapel Hill. The 7-foot Veesaar had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Tar Heels (15-4, 3-3 ACC).

UNC had lost three of four amid an abrupt defensive downturn. But the Tar Heels had no troubles against the Fighting Irish (10-9, 1-5). UNC shot 50.8% and hit a season-high 13 3-pointers.

Sir Mohammed had 14 points while Jalen Haralson added 13 for the Irish. They have lost five straight and are playing without injured leading scorer Markus Burton.

Boston College 65, Pittsburgh 62: Boden Kapke scored 19 points, and his 3-pointer with 22 seconds left was the game-winning basket for the host Eagles (9-10, 2-4 ACC) against the Panthers (8-11, 1-5). Landstown High graduate Donald Hand Jr. had 10 points and seven rebounds for BC.

Pitt teammates Roman Siulepa and Cameron Cohren each scored 13 points; Cohren grabbed 12 rebounds and Siulepa pulled down 11. Cummings missed two 3-pointers in the final seconds.

No. 1 Arizona 77, Cincinnati 51: Motiejus Krivas, 7-foot-2, scored 17 points, Ivan Kharchenkov added 14 and Arizona (19-0, 6-0 Big 12) pulled away late in Tucson to remain one of three unbeaten teams in the country, along with Nebraska and Miami of Ohio.

The Bearcats (10-9, 2-4), led by Baba Miller’s 14 points, tested Arizona with an early 14-1 run to take a 20-16 lead midway through a rugged first half, but Arizona responded for a 33-27 halftime advantage and went on a 20-4 run to move ahead 58-44.

No. 7 Nebraska 76, Washington 66: Pryce Sandfort scored 23 points to lead No. 7 Nebraska past Washington 76-66 Wednesday night, extending the Cornhuskers’ winning streak to 23 games.

The Huskers (19-0, 8-0), who earned their highest ranking in program history this week, were in control throughout against injury-plagued Washington and are alone in first place in the Big Ten.

Hannes Steinbach had his 11th double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Huskies (10-9, 2-6), who lost for the fifth time in six games. They were playing their fourth top-15 foe in 15 days.

No. 8 Gonzaga 84, Pepperdine 60: Davis Fogle scored 17 points as Gonzaga (20-1, 8-0 West Coast Conference) defeated the Waves (6-15, 1-7) for the 51st consecutive time. Tyon Grant-Foster and Mario Saint-Supery each scored 12 points for the host Bulldogs.

This is the 29th consecutive season the Bulldogs have won at least 20 games. They rank second to only Kansas, which has a streak of 37 20-win seasons.

No. 11 Illinois 89, Maryland 70: Andrej Stojakovic had 30 points and nine rebounds and David Mirkovic had 15 points and nine rebounds for the host Illini (16-3, 7-1 Big Ten), who won their eighth straight.

Andre Mills had 16 points and Solomon Washington had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Terrapins (8-11, 1-7).

Christendom 72, Regent 70: Michael Vander Woude hit a 3-pointer with 1 second remaining as the Crusaders, from Front Royal, edged the Royals (2-15) in Gateway Christian’s gym. Vander Woude had 22 points, hitting 6 of 7 3-point tries, for the visitors.

Logan McElveen capped a 7-0 Regent run with a layup with 4 seconds to go, putting the Royals ahead 70-69.

Senior Darrin Clark, a Nansemond River High graduate, who recently became the first 1,000-point scorer in Regent history, netted a game-high 18 points. Chauncey Gilliam had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Brendan Goods had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Bryant & Stratton 80, Forsyth Technical Community College 75: The Bobcats (11-5, 9-3 conference) prevailed in Atlantic Shores’ gym for their fourth consecutive victory.

Liberty 76, Western Kentucky 69: Kaden Metheny had 19 points, five rebounds and six assists for the Flames (16-3, 8-0 Conference USA) in Bowling Green, Kentucky. JJ Harper added 16 points and Brett Decker Jr. 15 points during the 10th win in a row for Liberty.
Teagan Moore led the Hilltoppers (11-8, 4-4) with 19 points.

UNC Greensboro 85, VMI 78: Justin Neely had 22 points and a program-record 22 rebounds for the Spartans (8-12, 4-3 Southern Conference) against the Keydets (6-14, 1-6) in Lexington. Neely, who earned his 11th double-double this season, broke Kyle Hines’ record of 21 rebounds set in 2005.

VMI’s TJ Johnson finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Tan Yildizoglu added 18 points.

Winthrop 76, Radford 75: Kareem Rozier scored 20 points, and Kody Clouet hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2.0 seconds left in Rock Hill, South Carolina, as the Eagles (14-8, 6-1 Big South) extended their win streak to six games. Rozier shot 6 for 7 from beyond the arc, and Clouet scored 19 points.

Del Jones finished with 25 points and eight rebounds for the Highlanders (11-10, 4-2). Dennis Parker Jr. added 13 points.

Longwood 91, Gardner-Webb 56: Elijah Tucker had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Lancers (11-10, 3-3 Big South) in Farmville, while Fats Billups III had 15 points and three steals.

Colin Hawkins finished with 14 points for the Runnin’ Bulldogs (2-19, 0-6), who have lost seven in a row.

Rhode Island 69, Richmond 68: Tyler Cochran led URI (11-8, 2-4) with 18 points, and RJ Johnson scored the winning shot with 3 seconds left at Robins Center. Cochran stole the inbounds pass to close the win, and he finished with seven rebounds and three steals.
Aiden Argabright led the Spiders (13-7, 3-4) with 20 points and four steals. Jaden Daughtry added 10 points, six rebounds and three steals

Army 87, Bucknell 84, OT: Jaxson Bell scored 18 points and Jackson Furman hit a game-winning 3-pointer with three-tenths of a second remaining in overtime in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, for the Black Knights (8-12, 2-5 Patriot League).

Bell made two free throws in the closing seconds of regulation to tie it at 80. In overtime, Furman grabbed a defensive rebound with eight seconds remaining before draining a 3-pointer in transition.

Pat Curtin finished with 25 points for the Bison (6-14, 3-4).

Navy 85, Holy Cross 68: Aidan Kehoe’s 29 points and seven rebounds propelled the Midshipmen (14-6, 6-1 Patriot League) at home, as did Austin Benigni’s 25 points and Jinwoo Kim’s 18 points.

Aiden Disu led the Crusaders (8-12, 3-4) with 18 points.

Women

Virginia Wesleyan 71, Randolph-Macon 61: Keira Bagwell scored 20 points and hit all three of her 3-point tries as the Marlins’ women (10-6, 4-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) completed a doubleheader sweep of the Yellow Jackets; VWU’s men won the first game.

Brianna Long had 15 points and 15 rebounds for VWU, and Bre Robinson had 15 points and five rebounds. The Marlins went ahead 9-0 and 32-16. R-MC closed to 48-43 by the third quarter’s end, but VWU didn’t yield.

The Yellow Jackets (10-6, 4-3) were led by McKenzie Matheny with 21 points.

Regent 60, Mid-Atlantic Christian 49: The Royals (2-12) won in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, ending a six-game slide. Carly James had 14 points for MACU’s Mustangs (1-8).

Washington and Lee 63, Bridgewater 57: Mary Schleusner of W&L (16-0, 7-0 ODAC), the sixth-ranked team in the nation, broke the all-time Division III rebounding record by hauling in 21, giving her 1,713. The 6-foot-1 fourth-year player from Charlotte, North Carolina, also had 22 points for her 14th double-double of the season.

The Eagles, who never led, fell to 13-3, 6-1 despite Riley Corcoran’s 16 points.

VCU 63, George Washington 60: Cyriah Griffin, who played for Princess Anne, King’s Fork and Menchville, led the Rams (7-13, 3-5 Atlantic 10) with a career-high 18 points at Siegel Center. She was 8 of 12 from the field, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range.

VCU led 38-15 at halftime. The Revolutionaries (10-11, 2-6) pulled within one point with three seconds remaining, but VCU’s Ty Williams went 2 for 2 at the free-throw line and GW’s desperation shot at the buzzer missed.

George Mason 57, St. Bonaventure 48: The Patriots (13-6, 8-0 Atlantic 10) won in Olean, New York, as Zahirah Walton had 14 points and seven rebounds and Mary Amoateng had 14 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Walton was 10 for 10 at the free-throw line, and Hampton High graduate Kennedy Harris had seen points, six rebounds and two steals.

Aaliyah Parker had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Bonnies (12-8, 3-5).

Radford 78, Longwood 63: The Highlanders (12-9, 4-2 Big South) extended their winning streak to three by defeating the visiting Lancers (13-6, 4-2).

Joi Williams scored 23 points and Georgia Simonsen had 18 points, six rebounds and three blocks for Radford. Cate Carlson, from Catholic High, had seven rebounds, four assists and four points.

Jesstynie Scott, with 12 points, was Longwood’s only double-digit scorer.

No. 3 UCLA 96, Purdue 48: Gabriela Jaquez scored 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting as UCLA took sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. The Bruins (18-1, 8-0) moved out of a tie with idle Iowa with their 12th straight win.

Nya Smith scored 14 points for Purdue (10-9, 2-6), which fell to 1-7 on the road.
