The Pilots lead the Coastal Plain League’s East Division by 4 1/2 games over Wilson and Morehead City.
Old Dominion’s Kyle Edwards was 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Then, making a rare pitching appearance, the Cox High graduate struck out the only three batters he faced in the seventh inning to close the game.
Brian Ereu, who pitched the first four innings, posted half of Peninsula pitchers’ 12 strikeouts. Isaiah Shivers scored twice for the Pilots, who led 5-0 after a five-run second against the Flamingos (11-17).
Saturday night, Edwards stole six bases as the Pilots erased a four-run deficit to edge the Tri-City Chili Peppers 8-7 before 1,435 in Colonial Heights.
Peninsula struck out 13 Chili Peppers and used seven relievers. Six of them yielded no runs, including winner Jake Kolkhorst and Ethan Blakeney, who pitched a scoreless ninth for the save. The Pilots won despite issuing 12 walks and yielding a fourth-inning grand slam to Alex Christie, which gave Tri-City a 7-3 lead.
After the Pilots plated one run on an error in the fifth, Curry Sutherland leveled the score at 7 on a three-run homer. In the seventh, Edwards then stole two bases on his way to breaking the tie.
The Pilots, who led Wilson by three games for first place in the East Division through Saturday, were at War Memorial Stadium to face the Florence Flamingos on Sunday night.
