UVA swimmer Gretchen Walsh repeats as ACC’s most outstanding female athlete



COLLEGE HONORS

University of Virginia swimmer Gretchen Walsh has won the Mary Garber Award as the ACC’s most outstanding female athlete for the second straight year.

The senior from Nashville, Tennessee, who won two gold medals and two silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics, led the Cavaliers to their fourth straight NCAA team championship.

She becomes the seventh female to be a repeat winner of the award. Basketball star Dawn Staley (1991-92) was the other Cavalier to accomplish the feat.

Walsh won three individual NCAA titles (50 free, 100 free and 100 fly) and was part of four first-place relay teams.

Duke basketball star Cooper Flagg won the Anthony J. McKevlin Award for the ACC Male Athlete of the Year.

  • Six Old Dominion athletes have been named to the VaSID Academic All-State Team: Dylan Brown (baseball), En’Dya Buford (women’s basketball), Callie Culhane (women’s lacrosse), Kiersten Donnelly (women’s swimming), Gustaf Hansson (men’s swimming) and Sofia Johnson (women’s tennis).
  • Six Christopher Newport athletes made the VaSID Academic All-State Team: Katie Abendschoen  (field hockey), Grant Hartman (baseball), Matt Liss (men’s soccer), Jamie Martin (softball), Nyah Savage (women’s soccer) and Vincent Truong (men’s tennis).

BASEBALL

Tides’ game in Florida postponed

The Norfolk Tides’ game at Jacksonville on Wednesday night has been postponed due to rain.
The game has been rescheduled as part of a 5:05 p.m. doubleheader Thursday.

Rays call up ex-Hokie Seymour

The Tampa Bay Rays have recalled pitcher Ian Seymour, a former Virginia Tech star, from Triple-A Durham.

The left-hander went 9-3 with a 2.62 ERA and an International League-best 104 strikeouts in 86 innings. His nine victories also lead the league.

Seymour made one appearance for the Rays earlier this season, tossing two scoreless innings and picking up a victory in a June 9 game at Boston.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Hokies reveal three Effect games

Virginia Tech has announced three Effect games for the upcoming football season.

The Sept. 6 home opener against Vanderbilt will be a Maroon Effect, where fans are encouraged to wear maroon. The Sept. 20 game against Wofford will be Salute to Service Day, and fans are asked to wear white. Fall Family Weekend will also take place for that contest.

The Oct. 4 Homecoming game against Wake Forest will be an Orange Effect.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Va. Tech to play in Paradise Jam

The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team will compete in the Paradise Jam on Nov. 27 and 29 in the Virgin Islands.

The Hokies will be in the Island Division with BYU, Oregon State and Vanderbilt. They will face BYU in their first game at 6 p.m. on Nov. 27.

This will be Virginia Tech’s third appearance in the Paradise Jam. The Hokies were also in the 2017 and 2003 tournaments.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER

UVA recruit is national player of year

Incoming University of Virginia women’s soccer player Addison Halpern has been named the Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

Now a freshmen who enrolled early at UVA, the Middlesex, New Jersey, native was the No. 5 overall recruit by Top Drawer Soccer. She scored 44 goals and led her high school team to a state championship and undefeated season.

She finished her high school soccer career with 180 goals and 68 assists.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

VT appoints GM

Easton Dally has been named general manager and director of operations for the Virginia Tech baseball program.

Dally spent the past six seasons doing graduate and undergraduate support work for the East Carolina baseball program. He earned his bachelor’s degree from ECU in 2023.

GOLF

Beach native 6th at VSGA event

Josh Cummins of Christiansburg shot a 5-under 67 to take a two-shot lead over Neil Kulkarni of Ashburn after the second round of the VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship on Wednesday at Two Rivers Country Club in Williamsburg.

Virginia Beach’s Max Bradshaw, who was tied for second after the first round, slipped to sixth with an even-par 72 on Wednesday. He is 4 under for the tournament, which concludes Thursday.
