Tides open second half of season with win on combined one-hitter

Cameron Weston combined with three relievers on a one-hitter and the Norfolk Tides defeated the Gwinnett Stripers 3-1 to open the second half of the International League season and a six-game series Tuesday night before 4,568 fans at Harbor Park.

Weston (2-4) gave up the lone hit — Nacho Alvarez Jr.’s leadoff single in the fourth inning — and run in six innings. He matched his season high with seven strikeouts and walked one. Houston Roth, Chesapeake native Colin Selby and Kade Strowd each pitched a scoreless inning to close it out, with Strowd picking up his second save.

The Tides (1-0, 31-43 in first half) got on the board first on Jordyn Adams’ RBI double to right off Stripers starter Hurston Waldrep (5-6) in the bottom of the second inning.

Gwinnett (0-1, 29-47) tied the game in the top of the third when Jason Delay reached second base on a throwing error, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Jurickson Profar’s sacrifice fly to left.

Norfolk quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Jeremiah Jackson hit an RBI groundout and added an insurance run on Samuel Basallo’s sacrifice fly to left. It was Basallo’s 35th RBI of the season.

The Tides managed only four hits, and Adams had two of them.

The teams are scheduled to play again at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday.
