Tides end drought in a big way, rout Charlotte on the road

After losing eight of their past nine games, the Norfolk Tides needed something to go their way.

Everything did Friday night in an 11-3 victory over the Charlotte Knights before 7,601 fans at Truist Field in North Carolina.

All nine Tides batters had at least one hit and Brandon Young pitched six strong innings as Norfolk (10-20) trimmed its series deficit to 3-1. Charlotte (15-16) saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end.

The Tides scored five runs each in the second and eighth innings. TT Bowens had the big hit in the second: a three-run double. Dylan Beavers hit an RBI single and extended his on-base streak to 25 games, while Samuel Basallo added an RBI double in the second.

In the eighth, Connor Pavolony hit a two-run double, Beavers and Coby Mayo added run-scoring singles and Vimael Machín capped the scoring with an RBI double.

Beavers and Machín finished with two hits and two RBIs apiece, while Livan Soto had three of Norfolk’s 13 hits.

Young (2-1) allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Nate Webb gave up the other run in the seventh inning, but Yaramil Hiraldo, Kade Strowd and Dylan Coleman combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Tides pitchers limited the Knights to six hits.

Charlotte starter Justin Dunn (1-2) surrendered six runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.

The teams are scheduled to play 1:05 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday to close out the series.
