Panthers sign QB Hooker to practice squad
Quarterback Hendon Hooker, who played for Virginia Tech and Tennessee, was signed to the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad.
Hooker, 27, was drafted in the third round in 2023 by the Detroit Lions but was released by them earlier this week. He only played 33 regular-season snaps for the Lions, all of them in three games last year.

Tribe to start with 3-game homestand
Defending Coastal Athletic Association Tournament champion William & Mary announced a nonconference schedule that starts with a three-game homestand at Kaplan Arena: Division II Barton on Nov. 9, Richmond on Nov. 12 and Old Dominion on Nov. 20.
W&M will play Dec. 3 at Wake Forest, where Tribe head coach Erin Dickerson Davis and associate head coach Dane Sparrow were assistant coaches before coming to Williamsburg.

Area runners cited by Conference Carolinas
Alexis Denham, a junior from Kecoughtan High in Hampton, was cited as one of Chowan’s three women’s runners to watch in a Conference Carolinas preview. Ferrum freshman Sarah Hudgins, from Norfolk’s Granby High, was cited as one of Ferrum’s three runners to watch.
Chowan was predicted 14th and Ferrum 15th in the 16-team conference.
On the men’s side, freshman Carlos Menendez from Portsmouth’s Manor High was named one of Ferrum’s three runners to watch. The Panthers were picked last among the 16 teams.

UVA reveals fall schedule
Virginia will play exhibition games against Georgetown (Sept. 27) and Navy (Oct. 19) this fall at Disharoon Park in Charlottesville, both at 1 p.m. In addition, the Cavaliers will play the annual Fall World Series on Oct. 23-25.
Meanwhile, UVA coach Chris Pollard announced the hiring of Casey Scott as the director of operation. Scott comes to Virginia after spending time at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Florida and USA Baseball.
