Old Dominion levels baseball series at UL Monroe

Old Dominion (14-25, 9-11 Sun Belt) evened its series at Louisiana Monroe, winning 9-5 Saturday by scoring three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Luke Waters hammered a homer in the second inning and an RBI double in the fourth inning, but the Warhawks (21-22, 7-13) still led 3-2 after five.

In the sixth, though, Scotty Young scored on Kyle Edwards’ groundout before Brody Connors hit a two-run single.

In the seventh, Tyler Zedalis coaxed a bases-loaded walk and Edwards followed with a two-run single. Kainen Jorge’s RBI single in the ninth capped the scoring.

The Monarchs used five relievers after starter Dylan Brown pitched the first 4 2/3 innings. Alex Hunt struck out the only batter he faced and got the win, and Bailey Matela retired four hitters for his fifth save of the year.

Each conference game, including today’s rubber contest at 2 p.m. Eastern, is critical to ODU’s hopes of qualifying for the 10-team Sun Belt Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama. Entering this weekend, with four weeks remaining in the regular season, the teams from sixth through 14th place were separated by just three games.

William & Mary 15, Stony Brook 0: Zach Boyd pitched a three-hit shutout in a seven-inning run-rule triumph, ensuring a series victory on New York’s Long Island.

The Tribe, which rallied from a six-run deficit in Friday’s 8-6 triumph, seemed to build on that momentum as W&M (18-24, 11-6 Coastal Athletic Association) increased its winning streak to five games by routing the Seawolves (21-18, 8-8).

Boyd walked none and struck out five, and Ben Parker clubbed a grand slam among the Tribe’s 14 hits. Parker was 3 for 4 with five RBIs and three runs, Lucas Carmichael was 2 for 6 with three RBIs and a run, and Jamie Laskofski, Anthony Greco and Charlie Felmlee each had two hits and scored twice.

W&M will seek a series sweep Sunday afternoon.

Virginia 6, No. 24 Georgia Tech 5: Behind Bradley Hodges’ starting pitching and a two-run homer by Western Branch High graduate Harrison Didawick, the Cavaliers (24-15, 11-9 Atlantic Coast Conference) improved to 2-0 in their series against the Yellow Jackets (29-14, 14-9) in Atlanta.

Hodges (2-1) held Georgia Tech to an earned run, two hits and two walks in seven innings, striking out seven. Eric Becker was 2 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs for UVA, which led 6-1 after 7 1/2 innings.

The Jackets broke through against the Cavs’ bullpen, including a home run by Connor Shouse, but Alex Markus struck out the final batter for a save.

Virginia Tech 9, Duke 8, 11 innings: The Hokies (27-16, 11-12 ACC) evened their series in Durham in dramatic fashion, erasing a 7-0 deficit against the Blue Devils (29-15, 13-10).

Henry Cooke slugged a three-run homer in the fifth and a two-run homer in the sixth to give Tech a brief 8-7 lead. Duke pulled even in the eighth, but Ben Watson’s sacrifice fly scored Nansemond River High graduate Clay Grady with the winning run in the 11th.

Along with Cooke’s five RBIs and three hits, Hudson Lutterman was 3 for 5 with two runs for Tech.

Grant Manning (4-3) got the victory with 4 2/3 innings of one-run relief.

Bryant & Stratton 15-6, Wake Technical Community College 7-7: The Bobcats (26-24, 16-13 conference) split a doubleheader in North Carolina, where the host Eagles (17-28, 12-20) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with a split. Cam Mathews scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Derek Arrocha (4-4).

In Game 2, BSC’s Joshua Smith and Nelson Zapata each had two hits and two RBIs.

In Game 1, Zapata drove in three runs, while teammates Benjamin Meeks, Chris Johnson and Justin Smith knocked in two apiece. Casey Proctor (5-3) pitched 5 2/3 innings for the victory.
