Norfolk Tides prospect Samuel Basallo hits 17th home run in win over Jacksonville

Samuel Basallo hit his 17th home run of the season and TT Bowens also homered to lead the Norfolk Tides to a 9-5 series-opening victory over Jacksonville at Vystar Ballpark on Tuesday night.

Basallo hit his home run in the fourth inning — a three-run blast that went 419 feet and was Basallo’s 11th home run of 400-plus feet, according to MLB Pipeline. Basallo, the major league’s 11th-ranked prospect, finished with three hits, including a double, and four RBIs.

Bowens hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning, while Norfolk’s Dylan Carlson added two hits and drew three walks.

Jacksonville led 3-2 after three innings, scoring one run with the help of Mother Nature. Tides starter Roansy Contreras was starting his windup with a runner on third base when a loud clap of thunder startled Contreras and he stopped his windup. The home plate umpire called a balk, allowing the runner from third base to score.

The Tides (35-49) and Jumbo Shrimp (53-34) continue their series in Jacksonville with a 7:05 p.m. game Wednesday. Norfolk RHP Chayce McDermott (1-5, 7.75 ERA) and LHP Adam Laskey (0-1, 1.04) are the scheduled starters.
