Norfolk State rallies for win on ESPNU
Making a rare appearance on ESPNU Saturday, host Norfolk State (21-17, 14-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to upend Coppin State 6-5 for a three-game sweep.
Kira Turner doubled and scored on Lauren Sheehan’s single, her second hit of the day, to cut the lead by the Eagles (3-26, 3-15) to 5-4. Kailey Bryant doubled home the tying run, and pinch runner Aniyah Michalak scored the winning run on Emory Shorts’ infield single.
Four of NSU’s nine hits came in the final inning off Emily Quintero, who pitched a complete game.
Delaware sweeps Hampton
Delaware (31-13, 17-4 Coastal Athletic Association) completed a three-game sweep at Hampton (13-28, 4-17) with a 13-5 triumph. Mary Beth Cahalan was 3 for 4 with five RBIs and hit one of three homers by the Blue Hens, who led 11-0 after 2 1/2 innings.
HU’s Carmynn Bonner hit an RBI triple in the third and a three-run homer in the fifth.
No. 3 CNU sweeps Lynchburg
No. 3 Christopher Newport (29-3) bounced back from its Game 2 loss Friday against No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan, winning 7-0, 2-0 at Lynchburg (21-13) in a doubleheader.
In Game 1, Jamie Martin pitched a two-hit shutout. In the sixth, CNU’s first two runs scored on an error before Sammy Drew belted a two-run homer. In the seventh, Candace Slaw hit a two-run double and scored on Brooke Greaver’s single.
In Game 2, Kate Alger pitched a three-hitter. In the sixth, Meredith Brickner singled home Slaw and Brenna Morefield.
No. 10 Hokies win 21-0 but lose series
No. 10 Virginia Tech (37-7, 15-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) split a doubleheader in eye-popping fashion Friday at Pittsburgh, winning 21-0 in five innings before losing 6-3. The Panthers (17-27, 6-15) won two of three in the series.
In Game 1, the Hokies hit 11 home runs, the second-most ever hit in an NCAA game. Cori McMillan belted three of them, and eight teammates hit one apiece. Michelle Chatfield’s and Nora Abromavage’s were grand slams.
But in Game 2, Pitt took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Chatfield’s three-run homer in the top of the sixth put the Hokies on top, but the Panthers answered with two in the bottom of the sixth.
No. 25 UVA takes series vs. Louisville
Eden Bigham (14-7) threw a two-hit shutout as No. 25 Virginia (33-14, 13-8 ACC) beat Louisville 6-0 before 1,102 in Charlottesville. The Cardinals fell to 23-20, 6-12, as UVA won two of three in the series.
Jade Hylton’s homer in the first and Bella Cabral’s homer in the sixth gave UVA a 2-0 lead, and the Cavaliers pieced together four more runs in the sixth.
Friday, UVA won 8-2. Hylton was 2 for 3, scoring twice and driving in a run, and M.C. Eaton homered.

ODU advances to Sun Belt final
Top-seeded Old Dominion moved one victory from repeating its Sun Belt Tournament championship, defeating fourth-seeded Troy 4-2 in a semifinal in Rome, Georgia.
The Monarchs won two sets for the doubles point before Sun Belt Player of the Year Cosme Rolland De Ravel and Jean-Karim Olivier de Sardan quickly won on lines 1 and 5, respectively. Connor Van Schalkwyk registered the clincher at 2 with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-1 victory.
The Monarchs will take on second-seeded Georgia Southern for the championship at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Eagles shut out No. 6 Coastal Carolina 4-0.
COLLEGE WOMEN’S TENNIS
No. 43 ODU finishes unbeaten in Sun Belt
Old Dominion, ranked 43rd in the nation, completed an unbeaten Sun Belt regular season with a 4-1 victory at Georgia Southern. The Monarchs next will go to Rome, Georgia, seeking their third consecutive Sun Belt tourney triumph.
ODU won the doubles point via triumphs from the tandems of Maury High graduate Mya Byrd and Victoria Matasova at No. 2 and Marina Markina and Kira Matushkina at 3.
Matushkina and Lidiia Rasskouskaia prevailed at the top two spots. The match ended when Byrd’s opponent on line 6, Amelie Rosadoro, retired because of injury before their third set was about to start.
Elon slips past W&M
Host Elon (17-5), edged William & Mary 4-3, leaving the Tribe to finish its regular season at 13-5, 4-1 in the CAA. No. 1 Hedda Gurholt, No. 3 Sia Chaudry and No. 6 Mira Kernagis won in singles for W&M, which will return to Elon next weekend for the conference tournament.

No. 4 CNU stops Stockton
Jamie Smith had four goals and Brett Jackson had two as Christopher Newport (15-2, 4-1 Coastal Lacrosse Conference), ranked fourth in Division III, won 16-6 over Stockton (8-9, 1-4) in Galloway, New Jersey.
Virginia (6-7) beat Lafayette 13-8 in Charlottesville.

No. 5 Salisbury edges CNU
No. 5 Salisbury repelled host Christopher Newport’s upset bid, winning 10-9 despite Maelyn Eversole’s four goals for CNU. The Sea Gulls held the Captains scoreless in the fourth quarter and went ahead to stay on Avery Dunbar’s goal with 4:26 remaining.

UVA gains experienced defensive back
Former Cincinnati and Kentucky defensive back Jordan Robinson committed to Virginia, sources confirmed to The Daily Progress of Charlottesville. The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder played 25 games in the last three seasons, and he made 18 tackles last season for Cincinnati.
