Norfolk State, mired in misery for most of the baseball season, unleashed its frustrations Sunday with a 13-2 victory at Northeast Conference-leading Central Connecticut State in New Britain.
NSU (2-31, 2-19 NEC) ended a 15-game losing streak since an 11-7 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson on March 21. Sunday’s defeat was the first NEC loss for the Blue Devils (24-9, 19-2) since March 8, snapping their 19-game conference winning streak.
NSU starter Nathaniel Varnier pitched six innings for the win, allowing just one run while striking out seven. Freshman Myles Crocker earned the save, pitching three scoreless innings.
Emmett Jefferson was 5 for 5 with five singles. Jalan Jones went 3 for 6 with four RBIs.
NSU led 5-2 after seven innings before collecting three runs in the eighth and five in the ninth.
Old Dominion 9, Louisiana Monroe 6 (10 innings): Despite squandering a 6-1 lead, the Monarchs (15-25, 10-11 Sun Belt) scored three runs in the 10th to win a road series 2-1 against the Warhawks (21-23, 7-14). Maverick Stallings had five RBIs and three hits, and Zach Leite had three RBIs and three hits. Both scored twice.
Leite hit a go-ahead RBI double before Stallings’ two-run homer in the extra inning.
Marco Levari (2-1) got two outs for the victory, and Tyler Stott pitched a scoreless 10th for his first save of the season.
William & Mary 8, Stony Brook 6: The Tribe earned a three-game sweep on New York’s Long Island and extended its winning streak to six games.
Freshman Jamie Laskofski hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning for W&M (19-24, 12-6 Coastal Athletic Association) and finished with four RBIs. Ben Parker doubled in his first at-bat to extend his hitting streak to 29 games.
Lucas Carmichael, who has an on-base streak of 29 games, homered in every game of the series. He had two hits and two runs Sunday, and Charlie Felmlee and Derek Holmes had three hits each.
No. 24 Georgia Tech 7, Virginia 6 (10 innings): The Yellow Jackets (30-14, 15-9 ACC) earned their only victory of a three-game series against the Cavaliers (24-16, 11-10) in Atlanta, scoring twice in the ninth to extend the game and winning in the 10th on left-handed-batting Kent Schmidt’s opposite-field homer off lefty Evan Blanco. It was Georgia Tech’s third home run of the day.
Aidan Teel, who was 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs, and Eric Becker both hit home runs for UVA.
Duke 14, Virginia Tech 0: The visiting Hokies (27-17, 11-13 ACC) managed just two hits and lost by the run rule in seven innings to the Blue Devils (30-15, 14-10). Sam Harris and AJ Gracia belted grand slams in the third and fifth innings, respectively.
Virginia Wesleyan 14-12, Roanoke 3-2: John Bastiaans had eight hits on the day as the host Marlins (11-18) rolled to a doubleheader sweep of the Maroons (19-18-1) in two games ended early by the run rule.
In Game 1, Bastiaans was 4 for 5 with a homer, four RBIs and two runs, Nick Sylvester was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, two runs and two walks, and Nick Valentin was 3 for 4 with two runs.
Jack McDowell (2-2) gave up two in the first but no more runs in six innings. He struck out four and walked five.
In Game 2, Bastiaans was 4 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs, and Joshua Jones was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Brandon Drewry, Sal Lettieri and Trevor Sheets combined for four shutout innings of relief.
Salisbury 8, Christopher Newport 0: The host Sea Gulls (28-7, 3-0 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference), ranked ninth in Division III, shut out the Captains (19-17, 0-4).
CNU had just three hits, two in the ninth inning. Tyler Villa (5-0) pitched seven innings for the victory, beating Cooper Newell (3-4).
