Class 5 Region B

Semifinals

No. 1 Menchville 5, No. 4 Warwick 1

The Monarchs defeated the Raiders and advanced to Friday’s regional final, clinching a state tournament berth in the process.

No. 6 Maury 0, No. 2 Kecoughtan 0 (Maury wins 4-2 in PKs)

The Commodores overcame the Warriors in penalty kicks to book a ticket in the state tournament. Maury will meet Menchville for the region championship at 7 p.m. Friday at Powhatan Field in Norfolk.

Class 3 Region A

Semifinals

No. 6 Tabb 3, No. 2 Lafayette 2 (Tabb wins 8-7 in PKS)

Tabb dethroned defending Class 3 state champion Lafayette by winning a penalty-kicks shootout 8-7 in the Region A semifinals. The teams were tied 2-2 following 80 minutes of regulation and four 5-minute overtime periods.

Tabb (10-6-4) earned a spot in the Region A championship game against No. 1 seed Hopewell on Thursday at Prince George High. Regardless of the outcome, the Tigers will play in the Class 3 state quarterfinals Tuesday.

Domani Arizpe and Solomon Arthur scored Tabb’s goals in regulation, while Ale Cante and Ever Salamanca scored for Lafayette (10-6-2). After four scoreless overtimes, both teams made their first seven penalty kicks.

Treavan Haywood gave Tabb an 8-7 lead in the shootout, which ended when Jack Troy — who scored the state championship-winning goal for the Rams a year ago — missed high over the bar.

Second-seeded James Jenson of Hickory pulled a major reversal for the championship, upending top-seeded Sam Dixon of Cox 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) Wednesday on First Colonial’s courts for the singles title and a state semifinal berth.

Jenson bounced back from a pair of losses on line 1 in the team tournament — 6-0, 6-1 to Dixon on Monday and a three-setter to Ocean Lakes’ Josh Bakhshi on Tuesday.

In the doubles final, second-seeded Jenson and Will Katchmark beat top-seeded Dixon and Lucca Gandolfo 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6).

Jenson already had helped the Hawks to their second straight team title, giving him a region “triple crown.” He will play a singles semifinal on the morning of June 13 at Huntington Park in Newport News, then will join Katchmark for a doubles semifinal in the afternoon.

Class 6 Region A final

Glen Allen 5, Grassfield 0: The host Grizzlies were dominated Thursday by the Jaguars, losing mostly 6-0 and 6-1 sets down the line. Even standout No. 1 player Deja Thomas trailed, with Arden Ebbesen leading her 6-2, 3-1 in the only singles match that didn’t finish.

But Grassfield earned a state tournament berth by edging Deep Run 5-4 earlier in the week. That victory was over one of the state’s powerhouses of the last decade.

Class 5 Region A individuals

Because their No. 2 player, Valentine Renault, was out of town taking exams, her partner Ava Rassool and the Cox Falcons defaulted to Great Bridge senior Kayla Kennedy and junior Chase London in the girls doubles final.

Kennedy and London, who would’ve been heavily favored had the match been played, will go to state together for the third consecutive year.

Cox hopes Renault will be back Friday, when the Falcons will play Menchville in a state quarterfinal in Newport News, while region team champion Ocean Lakes will play host to Maury.

The singles final brought an eyebrow-raising score: London defeated Kennedy 6-3, 6-0.

Kennedy had won her region in singles in her previous three Great Bridge seasons and was a state singles champ as a freshman. London, who regularly plays No. 2 behind Kennedy in Great Bridge’s dual lineup, will make her first state singles semifinal appearance.
