East Carolina jumps well ahead early, turns back Army



COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Katin Houser passed for 251 yards and two touchdowns Thursday night as East Carolina opened American Conference play with a 28-6 victory over defending league champion Army in Greenville, North Carolina.

ECU (3-2, 1-0 American) has won nine of its 10 meetings with Army despite a road setback last season.

Houser threw for two touchdowns and ran for another — all in the first quarter for a 21-0 lead. Anthony Smith had a catch of 40 yards or more on ECU’s opening two drives, the second giving the Pirates a 14-0 lead. Houser connected with Jayvontay Conner for a 20-yard touchdown with 39 seconds left in the first quarter.

ECU’s touchdown in the second half came when backup holder Kyler Pearson ran for a 32-yard touchdown on a fake field goal to cap the scoring.

Noah Short rushed for 127 yards on just 11 carries for Army (1-3, 0-2), which gained more than 100 yards on the ground for the 34th straight game. Quarterback Dewayne Coleman added 51 yards rushing, including a 2-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

NSU coach Giles makes Hagerstown CC Hall of Fame

Kenneth Giles, who directs Norfolk State’s track and field programs, will join the Hagerstown Community College Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2025 and will be inducted Oct. 11.

Giles built his decorated coaching career on the foundation of his own success as an athlete. A standout 800-meter runner, Giles earned junior-college All-America honors in 1985 by finishing eighth at the indoor national meet for Hagerstown, located in Maryland. He continued his career at the University of North Florida, where he set the school’s 800-meter indoor record.

With NSU, Giles has collected 43 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Most Outstanding Coach awards. His Spartans have won 11 individual MEAC cross country championships and produced three NCAA All-Southeast Region honorees.

Since he took over as the head track coach, Giles’ athletes have won more than 100 individual conference championships, earned over 400 All-MEAC honors and qualified for NCAA regionals more than 100 times.

NSU setter gains prestigious berth

Norfolk State senior volleyball setter Sydney McCree was one of three MEAC athletes selected to the USA Basketball Foundation’s Torch Leadership in Sport Mentoring group.

Application requirements included having a minimum grade-point average of 3.0; having a junior, senior or graduate-level standing at an HBCU, Hispanic-serving institution or AANAPISI (Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions); and submission of a résumé, cover letter and letter of recommendation.

No. 1 UVA rolls at Clemson

Top-ranked Virginia (9-0-1, 3-0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) got goals from three different players on the way to a 3-0 victory at Clemson (3-3-5, 0-2-2).

Lia Godfrey scored in the 16th minute off an Addison Halpern pass.

In the opening minute of the second half, Liv Rademaker picked the ball up near midfield off a turnover. She sent a ball ahead to Maggie Cagle on the right wing, where Cagle redirected it toward Meredith McDermott on a run down the middle of the box. McDermott picked the ball up near the penalty spot and chipped it over the sliding goalkeeper.

In the 52nd minute, Cagle picked up the ball on the right flank and served it from 30 yards to Ross at the penalty spot, from where she scored.

Hokies hire aide from Boise State

As expected, Virginia Tech announced the hiring of assistant coach David Moats to Mike Young’s staff.

Moats spent the last eight years at Boise State — five as the director of basketball operations and the last three as an assistant and director of recruiting. He also has worked at Weber State, Florida (when Billy Donovan was the head coach) and Wyoming.

COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY

Virginia Wesleyan overcomes Meredith

Landry Meyer had two goals and an assist as Virginia Wesleyan (3-4) slipped past Meredith 4-3 Wednesday. Her second goal came with 4:22 left in the fourth quarter, breaking a tie after the Avenging Angels (3-5) had erased a three-goal deficit in about 11 1/2 minutes.

Clair Wagner and Lauren Kite also scored for VWU, and DJ Holsclaw made seven saves for her third victory of the season.
