Apprentice begins nationals with victory
Third-seeded Apprentice School began its stay at the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Small College World Series in DuBois, Pennsylvania, with an 11-1 victory over Florida National.
The Builders next will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against No. 2 Penn State DuBois, which edged No. 7 Penn State Schuylkill 6-5.
Camden Weston, Jett Winslow and Jeremy Harmon were each 3 for 4, and Isaac McCallister (7-4) pitched a three-hitter for the Builders (26-16). Weston scored three runs, Harmon drove in three, and Landon Turner was 2 for 3 with two runs.
A seven-run fourth put Apprentice ahead 9-1, and Harmon’s RBI double in the fifth ended the game because the lead reached 10. The Conquistadors fell to 20-20.
In Sunday’s awards banquet, Apprentice’s Zander Mizelle and Harmon were named to the first team, while Charley Higginbotham was named a second-team All-American. Nate Yeary earned honorable mention, and Harmon, Matt Phoebus and Bryce Post gained All-Academic status. Phoebus was a finalist in the Home Run Derby.
Lynchburg, Randolph-Macon gain NCAA berths
Old Dominion Athletic Conference members Lynchburg (38-7) and Randolph-Macon (30-15) landed host roles in the 64-team NCAA Division III tourney, which will start with 16 four-team, double-elimination regionals.
Fifth-ranked Lynchburg, the 2023 NCAA champion, will face fellow Virginia team Marymount (24-19), and Maryville (32-12) from Tennessee will meet Emory (26-14) in the other game on the Hornets’ field.
ODAC runner-up R-MC will take on Messiah (31-14) of Pennsylvania in Ashland at 1:30 p.m. Friday, after Methodist (32-13) will take on the regional top seed, No. 12 SUNY Brockport (36-3-2) at 10 a.m. It’s the Yellow Jackets’ first time as a regional host.
Because of expected inclement weather, Old Dominion’s scheduled game Tuesday at Richmond was canceled and will not be made up.

Tribe hires coach Howard from CNU
William & Mary named Jonathan Howard the head coach of the Tribe women’s golf program. He joins W&M after spending the last three years as the head women’s coach at Christopher Newport. He also spent five years as an assistant coach of the CNU men’s and women’s golf teams, as well as being Lynchburg’s head men’s coach for two years.
As a player, he qualified for the NCAA Division III championship tournament with the Captains in 2011 and ’12.

Churchland alum leads No. 2 W&L to NCAAs
Washington and Lee and Lynchburg took two of the 43 team berths in the NCAA Division III championship event May 20-23 in Penfield, New York, near Rochester.
W&L’s Jonathan McEwen, a Churchland High graduate, is ranked No. 1 individually in D-III, and the Generals are ranked second. McEwen leads all D-III golfers this school year with five tournament victories, including the ODAC.

UVA’s Odom adds to staff
Virginia coach Ryan Odom announced the addition of UVA alum Michael Crowder as director of culture formation and alumni engagement.
Last season, Crowder served as the managing director-culture formation and program development at Longwood under former Lancers head coach and current UVA associate head coach Griff Aldrich.
Virginia Tech, as expected, announced the signing of 7-foot German Antonio Dorn. He played the last two seasons with Bozic Estriche Knights Kirchheim in Germany’s second division, averaging 9.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in 2024-25.

Tribe adds two players
William & Mary coach Jessica Giuggioli announced the addition of Alexia Gonzalez-Galino of Barcelona, who was ranked fourth among under-18 players in Spain, and Julia Viesi of Sau Paulo, who was ranked No. 8 among Brazilian 18-and-under players.
Viesi join Tilda Larsson of Malmo, Sweden, and Rebeka Svabikova of Nuremberg, Germany.
