Connor Barry continued his season’s sizzling start with four more touchdown passes as Christopher Newport hammered Gettysburg 49-14 Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania.
Barry, the reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, completed 21 of 28 for 276 yards and ran for 40 on four carries. He has nine touchdown passes this season, including five in a season-opening 38-7 victory over Trine.
Three of Saturday’s TD throws went to running back Gunner White, a Tallwood High alum who had 70 yards on seven catches, plus 47 yards and a TD on six carries. Jordin Lennon led the Captains with 61 yards on eight rushes.
Even Matt Dzierski, a former two-time NJAC yearly honoree, threw a touchdown pass and completed 2 of 3 as a backup. He mostly had to give up quarterbacking because of injuries but returned as a wide receiver this season.
CNU amassed 548 yards of offense while giving up 318 to the Bullets (0-2). The Captains led 14-0 after one quarter and 42-7 at the half.
North Carolina Wesleyan 49, Apprentice 16: Nahjir Seagraves ran for four touchdowns and 159 yards on 18 carries as the Bishops (2-0) spoiled the Builders’ home opener in Newport News.
Quarterback Kendall Hunt ran for both touchdowns for Apprentice (0-2) and finished with 19 yards on eight carries. He completed 12 of 15 passes for 92 yards, and Trevaris Jones completed 6 of 13 for 53 yards.
Baker Green (five catches for 60) and Kyle Musselman (seven for 49) paced Apprentice’s receiving corps. A tackle by Apprentice’s Campbell Clark forced a fourth-quarter safety.
Bowling Green 23, Liberty 13: Drew Pyne threw a touchdown and Chris McMillian added a late rushing score as Bowling Green won in Ohio.
Pyne completed 16 of 31 for 146 yards, finding Jacob Harris for a 12-yard touchdown to give the Falcons (2-1) a 10-0 halftime lead. McMillian’s 7-yard direct-snap run in the fourth all but sealed the win, and kicker Jackson Kleather delivered field goals from 50, 48 and 26 yards.
Liberty (1-2) pulled within 13-10 in the third on former Oscar Smith High quarterback Ethan Vasko’s 44-yard pass to Donte Lee Jr., but Vasko was intercepted twice and finished with 194 yards. Eriq George had two sacks to lead a Falcons defense that tallied seven tackles for loss and three pass breakups.
Military
Navy 42, Tulsa 23: Blake Horvath rushed for 159 yards and a touchdown to lead a 369-yard rushing performance from Navy in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Horvath opened the game with three consecutive turnovers, leading to a 14-point first-quarter deficit. At that point, Horvath was 1 for 3 with two interceptions and a lost fumble. He went 5 for 7 with a touchdown and 84 yards from that point.
Alex Tecza and Eli Heidenreich both rushed for 72 yards for Navy (3-0, 2-0 American) against the Golden Hurricane (1-2, 0-1). Tecza had two touchdowns. Heidenreich and Brandon Chatman had one apiece.
Utah State 49, Air Force 30: Bryson Barnes accounted for five touchdowns for the Aggies (2-1) in Logan, Utah, in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams. Barnes was 17-of-22 passing for 287 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran for TDs of 7, 11 and 7 yards.
Braden Pegan caught seven passes for 147 yards, which included scoring receptions of 54 and 38.
Quarterback Liam Szarka ran for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns and an 11-yarder for the Falcons (1-1), Owen Allen added a 1-yard TD run.
