Friday Night Highlights: Norfolk Academy crosses state line to win football opener

Courtland Simmons scored three touchdowns and Parks Andrews scored two Friday night as Norfolk Academy began its football season with a 37-20 victory at Currituck County in Barco, North Carolina.

The host Knights scored first, but Andrews’ 4-yard touchdown run and Henry Chesson’s initial PAT of the night tied the score at 7 in the first quarter.

Andrew ran 30 yards to the end zone with 4:53 to go in the second quarter, giving Norfolk Academy a 14-7 halftime lead.
Simmons’ 7-yard TD run put the Bulldogs ahead 21-13. Early in the fourth quarter, Davis Steadman threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Steadman and ran for 2-point conversion for a 29-13 margin.

Simmons’ 3-yard rushing TD and subsequent 2-point run made it 37-13 with 3:43 left in the game.

Greenbrier Christian Academy 48, Rappahannock County 19: In the area’s only Friday game involving eight-man football, the Gators cruised to a road victory in Caleb Bailey’s head-coaching debut. It was a matchup of Virginia Independent Schools Football Association squads.

Tucker Basnight ran for 267 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. Tyson Moravec was 13 of 17 for 187 yards and two TDs, and tight end Cooker Rupe caught three passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. Free safety Conner Isenberg intercepted a pass and forced a fumble.

North Cross 62, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy 0: The traditionally powerful Raiders of Roanoke rolled past the Saints in Suffolk in Robbie Duncan’s NSA coaching debut.

In the first half, when North Cross scored 33 points, James Madison-committed Jase Rhodes made two touchdown receptions and collected an interception and a sack. He also had an interception return for a touchdown called back.

Fredericksburg Christian 27, Atlantic Shores 16: A stretch of three touchdowns in less than six minutes to close the first half gave the Seahawks a 21-0 halftime deficit in Fredericksburg in a season opener, though they scored 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Trip Blalock threw touchdown passes of 28 yards to Jude Holst and 56 yards to Ja’Den McCoy for a 14-0 edge. Just when it looked like Atlantic Shores could shave that margin in half, Austin Fountain returned a Seahawks fumble 91 yards for a touchdown in the final minute of the half.

Atlantic Shores scored a touchdown and 2-point conversion early in the fourth quarter, but Blalock ran 34 yards for a TD with about nine minutes remaining.

The Seahawks answered back with another TD and 2-point play with about seven minutes left and got the ball back, but a Ziggy Tolson interception with about three minutes remaining all but clinched the outcome.

Roanoke Catholic 49, Isle of Wight Academy 0: The visiting Celtics overcame IWA in Mike Newhall’s first game as the Chargers’ head coach.
