Jermaine Marrow, who grew up on the Peninsula, authored one of the most notable results of The Basketball Tournament this year.
The 6-foot Marrow scored the game’s last six points on a pair of 3-pointers Sunday night, lifting Sideline Cancer to the Elam Ending target score and a 73-63 second-round victory over The Ville. He came off the bench and finished with a team-high 20 points in 24 minutes.
Sideline Cancer was seeded fourth and The Ville first in the eight-team region competing at Freedom Hall, once the longtime home of the Louisville Cardinals.
The Ville is an alumni team, and former Louisville and NBA player Montrezl Harrell led the hosts with 21 points.
Marrow, a former standout guard for Hampton University and Kecoughtan and Heritage High, most recently played for an Azerbaijani pro team, Nakhchivan. He also has played for squads in Denmark, Spain, Slovakia, the Republic of Georgia and Vietnam.
Marrow, who will turn 28 on Aug. 7, was just 1 of 5 from inside the 3-point arc. But he was 6 of 7 from outside it.
The game was held Sideline Cancer led by 25 before seeing The Ville significantly cut the margin. Marrow’s team was ahead 65-58 as the clock ticked under 4 minutes in the fourth quarter, meaning eight more points (73) for the leading team would be the target score.
After a Ville 3-pointer made it 67-63, Marrow sank a 3-pointer to put his team ahead by seven. He then made a steal and banked in a transition trey from the top of the key to end the contest.
Sideline Cancer will face LA Ignite at 9 p.m. Wednesday in the round of 16.
