Samuel Basallo hit his 17th home run of the season and TT Bowens also homered to lead the Norfolk Tides to a 9-5 series-opening victory over Jacksonville at Vystar Ballpark on Tuesday night.
Basallo hit his home run in the fourth inning — a three-run blast that went 419 feet and was Basallo’s 11th home run of 400-plus feet, according to MLB Pipeline. Basallo, the major league’s 11th-ranked prospect, finished with three hits, including a double, and four RBIs.
Bowens hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning, while Norfolk’s Dylan Carlson added two hits and drew three walks.
Jacksonville led 3-2 after three innings, scoring one run with the help of Mother Nature. Tides starter Roansy Contreras was starting his windup with a runner on third base when a loud clap of thunder startled Contreras and he stopped his windup. The home plate umpire called a balk, allowing the runner from third base to score.
Alright… we don't even know what to say about this. Mother nature and the @JaxShrimp are in cahoots!#SCNotTop10 pic.twitter.com/TZjMZh6ymq
