Vanderbilt narrowly outplayed Virginia in the teams’ first preseason exhibition Thursday night in Nashville, Tennessee.
The teams, both of which have predominantly new personnel, played two halves and kept score in each separately. The Commodores won the first half 44-41 and the second half 51-46.
Six Cavaliers scored in double figures: Malik Thomas (18 points), Thijs De Ridder (15), Johann Grünloh (13), Jacari White (12), Ugonna Onyenso (12) and Chance Mallory (10).

Houser sparks ECU past Tulsa
Katin Houser passed for 300 yards and two touchdowns, London Montgomery rushed for 125 yards and a score, and East Carolina beat Tulsa 41-27 Thursday night at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
ECU (4-3, 2-1 American Conference) took a 31-14 lead on its first possession of the second half when Montgomery ran for a 51-yard touchdown. Tulsa (2-5, 0-4) scored the next 10 points to get within 31-24 as Seth Morgan made a 46-yard field goal and Stephen Kittleman capped an eight-play, 65-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.
ECU then went 61 yards on its next drive before settling for a 32-yard field goal to make it 34-24 with 10:51 left. Then the Pirates stopped Tulsa on fourth-and-15 near midfield when Rion Roseborough sacked Baylor Hayes, and Houser put ECU ahead 41-24 on a 2-yard run.

Tribe aids tourney chances with victory
William & Mary (5-6-4, 3-2-2) moved over .500 in the Coastal Athletic Association and boosted its postseason chances with a dominant 3-0 victory Thursday night over Northeastern (2-8-5, 1-4-2).
The Tribe outshot the Huskies 26-3 and got goals from Ivey Crain in the 29th minute, Sheridan Brummett in the 30th and Nora Green-Orset in the 48th. W&M will finish the regular season with 1 p.m. home matches against Monmouth (10-4-1, 5-2) Sunday and Hampton (5-9-1, 0-6-0) on Oct. 26.
The top three teams from the six-team CAA South Division will join the North’s top three in the conference tournament. UNC Wilmington (6-0-1) is safely in, so W&M is competing with Charleston (3-3-1), Elon (2-2-2) and Campbell (2-3-2) for two berths.

2-OT victory lifts ODU to 4-1 in Big East
Serena Langendoen rifled home a shot off a penalty corner in the golden-goal second overtime, giving Old Dominion (6-7, 4-1 Big East) a 3-2 home victory over Temple.
Suus Broers made three saves for the victory, which came when Langendoen took a pass from Cosima Perleth near the top of the circle and lined it into the cage’s right corner.
The Owls led 1-0 at halftime on Agustina Tucceri’s goal, and it remained that way until the fourth quarter. Amelie Zielcke scored in the 49th minute, but Temple’s Lucia Magro made it 2-1 with a penalty stroke in the 56th.
ODU forced overtime, though, on Avery Jackson’s goal just 50 seconds later. The Monarchs are second only to Liberty in a conference that will have a four-team tournament Nov. 7 and 9 in Lynchburg.
No. 13 Monmouth shuts out W&M
Emily Singer scored twice as visiting Monmouth (10-2, 3-0 CAA), ranked 13th nationally, shut out William & Mary 4-0. Alexandra de Jesus posted 15 saves for the Tribe (1-11, 0-3).
Marian (8-3) of Wisconsin earned a 1-0 overtime shutout win at Virginia Wesleyan (4-7). Charlotte Touw’s goal in the 73rd minute proved decisive despite DJ Holsclaw’s six saves for VWU.

ODU goes 5 sets for 1st Sun Belt win
Old Dominion (4-14, 1-6) captured its first Sun Belt victory, outlasting Georgia State 3-2 (29-27, 20-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-9) to start a two-match series in Norfolk. Katie Rakoski scored three kills to highlight a late 5-0 run, Elisa Maggi had 19 kills and 12 digs, and Kate Kilpatrick had 19 kills and 10 assists.
The Panthers dropped to 10-8, 1-6, and the rematch is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
No. 21 VWU improves to 21-1
Host Virginia Wesleyan (21-1, 7-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) rolled past Bridgewater 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-21), bouncing back from its defeat at Salisbury. Niya Nash had 38 assists, Madi Schmidt had nine kills and 10 digs and Breana Brooks had eight kills and five blocks for the Marlins.
Reagan Stoop had nine kills and eight digs for the Eagles (14-6, 6-3).
CNU runs streak to 7
Christopher Newport (15-6) extended its winning streak to seven matches, defeating UC Santa Cruz 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-20) to start the CNU Invitational at Freeman Center.
Alyssa Dozier had 11 kills and four blocks, Fielding Croft had 31 assists and Emmy Carpenedo had eight kills and four aces.
Howard (11-7, 5-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) beat Norfolk State 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-21) in Washington. For NSU (1-19, 0-7), Gabrielle Gilbert had 11 kills and seven digs, while Jasmine Mataira had 20 assists and five digs.
North Carolina A&T overcame William & Mary 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 24-26, 25-21) to begin a two-match set in Greensboro. Avery Horejsi had 19 digs, Beatriz Silva had 19 assists and three aces and Audrey Brcka had 11 kills for the Tribe (6-12, 1-6 Coastal Athletic Association).
Tyne Ross had 16 kills and 13 digs for A&T (8-8, 4-3).
Campbell (13-5, 5-2 CAA) overcame Hampton 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-11) in Buies Creek, North Carolina. Katerina Pappa had seven kills for the Pirates (1-18, 0-9), who get a rematch Saturday.

Maryland takes lead entering Evie Odom event’s final round
Maryland shot a 1-under-par 279 Friday in the second round to grab the overall lead in the Evie Odom Invitational at Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach.
The Terrapins were at 10-over 570 overall, three shots better than first-round leader Georgia, who were 8 over par Friday.
James Madison (290-299-589) was ninth and Old Dominion (314-295-609) last in the field of 12 entering Saturday morning’s final round.
South Alabama’s Daniela Palmeros and Georgia’s Maria Eidhagen Harrouch shared the individual lead at 1-under 139. Barbara Car and Puneet Bajwa paced ODU at 150, sharing 44th place among 72 competitors.

Leonard, Els among leaders in Richmond
Former major winners Justin Leonard and Ernie Els, along with Steve Allan, shared the first-round lead with 6-under-par 66s at the Dominion Energy Charity Classic on the Country Club of Virginia’s River Course in Richmond. It’s the PGA Tour Champions’ first playoff event of the year.
Bernhard Langer, the 50-and-over circuit’s all-time victories leader, and Greg Chalmers shared second place at 4 under. Action resumes at 10:15 a.m. in the field of 69. The three leaders will tee off at 12:21 p.m.
