Baseball

Class 6 Region A

Semifinals

No. 5 Deep Run 3, No. 1 Western Branch 2

The Wildcats overcame the Bruins.

No. 6 Glen Allen 7, No. 2 Grassfield 4

The Grizzlies, who fell behind 6-0, made a comeback but couldn’t catch up, were defeated by the Jaguars. Glen Allen will compete against Deep Run for the regional title at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Class 5 Region A

Final

No. 3 Ocean Lakes 3, No. 1 Cox 1

WP: Daniel Hamilton

The Dolphins upset the Falcons to win the Class 5 Region A championship. Hamilton, a sophomore, pitched seven innings, and Mitchel Byers recorded the save in the eighth. Cox’s Alex John tied the game with a base hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. But Ocean Lakes’ Donovan Nagle and Zach Waterman both followed with runs in the eighth.

Class 5 Region B

Semifinals

No. 1 Maury 4, No. 5 Bethel 1

WP: Henry Mulvey

Lee Garris led the Commodores with two hits and an RBI at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton as they clinched a state quarterfinal berth. Mulvey pitched five innings, picking up the win.

No. 7 Kecoughtan 8, No. 3 Warwick 4

The Warriors took a state berth and will challenge No. 1 Maury for the region championship at 4 p.m. Friday at War Memorial Stadium.

Class 3 Region A

Semifinals

No. 1 New Kent 5, No. 5 Colonial Heights 0

The Trojans swept Colonial Heights to advance to Thursday’s tournament final and clinch a state quarterfinal berth.

No. 2 Grafton 1, No. 6 Tabb 0

WP: Lantz Williams

Luke Wilz recorded the lone run of the game as the host Clippers defeated the Tigers for a state tournament bid. Williams struck out 11 in seven innings. Grafton will play in the regional final Thursday at New Kent.

Class 2 Region A

Semifinals

No. 5 Poquoson 5, No. 1 Lunenburg Central 4

WP: Eli Monroe (2-1); LP: Elijah Pearce

The Islanders went west and overcame the top-seeded Chargers to return to the state tournament and advance to Thursday’s final against No. 2 King William. Monroe recorded two RBIs, and Eli Tyndall struck out eight.

No. 2 King William 2, No. 6 Randolph-Henry 1

The Cavaliers overcame the Statesmen, gained a state bid and will play for the regional title against Poquoson on Thursday.

Class 6 Region A

Semifinals

No. 1 Western Branch 4, No. 4 Cosby 0

WP: Haylee Bandura

Marissa Bernheimer went 2 for 2 with three RBIs for the Bruins, who ensured a spot in the state tournament. Bandura struck out eight and only allowed two hits in seven innings.

No. 3 Glen Allen 4, No. 2 Grassfield 0

The Jaguars shut out the Grizzlies in Chesapeake, ending Grassfield’s season and giving Glen Allen a state berth.

Class 5 Region A

Final

No. 1 Kellam 4, No. 7 Great Bridge 3

WP: Avonlea Flanagan

Karley Boone, Kiley Brodeur and Grace Mellen led the Knights’ offense with two hits each to capture the region championship. Carson Schakel added a single, and Chloe Jackson hit a sacrifice fly. Flanagan earned the win. Both teams next will head to the state quarterfinals.

Class 5 Region B

Semifinals

No. 1 Kecoughtan 6, No. 4 Maury 0

WP: Skyler Ackerman

Ackerman earned a shutout at Stoney Run Complex in Newport News by scattering six hits across seven innings, striking out six and walking none. It clinched a state bid for the Warriors. Junior Kylie Salyers went 1 for 3 with a three-run home run, and Charleigh Lupton went 1 for 2 with a two-run double.

No. 2 Granby 4, No. 3 Menchville 0

WP: Kyrsten Wells (9-2)

Wells threw a two-hit shutout for the Comets as they ensured a state berth. Anwynn Williams tallied two hits and scored twice, while Dekya Harris contributed two RBIs. Granby will meet No. 1 Kecoughtan at 5 p.m. Thursday at Stoney Run in the tournament final.

Class 4 Region A

Semifinals

No. 1 Gloucester 10, No. 4 Smithfield 0

The host Dukes shut out the Packers to book a place in the state tournament. Gloucester will compete with the winner of No. 3 Churchland vs. No. 2 Warhill on Thursday at 5 p.m.

No. 3 Churchland vs. No. 2 Warhill

The victor will gain a state tournament berth.

Class 3 Region A

Semifinals

No. 1 New Kent 10, No. 5 Tabb 0

The Bay Rivers District champion Trojans defeated the Tigers in a shutout and captured a state berth.

No. 2 York 12, No. 6 Grafton 7

The Falcons outscored their county rivals, booking a state tournament trip. They will travel to New Kent for the region final Thursday.

Class 2 Region A

Semifinals

No. 1 King William 11, No. 4 Southampton 1

The Cavaliers earned a decisive victory with a state berth on the line. They will play the winner of No. 3 Lunenburg Central at No. 2 Poquoson on Thursday for the region title.

No. 3 Lunenburg Central at No. 2 Poquoson

The victor will gain a state berth and a trip to King William on Thursday.

Class 6 Region A

Semifinals

No. 1 Cosby 4, No. 5 Landstown 3

The host Titans edged the Eagles with a state bid on the line.

No. 7 Deep Run 1, No. 3 Oscar Smith 0

The Wildcats gained a state berth and will challenge No. 1 Cosby on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the region final.

Class 5 Region A

Semifinals

No. 1 Kellam vs. No. 4 Great Bridge

The winner will meet No. 3 Hickory on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for the region championship, hosted by Ocean Lakes.

Class 3 Region A

Semifinals

No. 1 Hopewell 1, No. 5 Petersburg 0

The top-seeded Blue Devils shut out the Crimson Wave and will play the winner of No. 2 Lafayette vs. No. 6 Tabb on Thursday for the region championship. Hopewell then will head to state.

No. 2 Lafayette vs. No. 6 Tabb

The winner will go to the state tournament.

Class 2 Region A

Semifinals

No. 4 Nandua 2, No. 9 Poquoson 1

The Islanders fell to the Eastern Shore’s Warriors in a close game in Onley. Nandua clinched a state berth.

No. 2 Bruton 6, No. 6 Lunenburg Central 0

The Panthers blanked the Chargers and progressed to Thursday’s regional final at 6:30 p.m., as well as capturing a state bid.

Girls soccer

Class 6 Region A

Semifinals

The host Wildcats outplayed the Grizzlies to capture a state tournament berth.

No. 2 Western Branch 3, No. 3 Glen Allen 2

Jayda Sutton led the Bruins with a brace. Mailya Parks followed with a goal and an assist. Western Branch will compete in the region championship match Thursday at Deep Run, then will head to the state tournament.

Class 5 Region A

No. 1 Kellam 1, No. 4 Great Bridge 0

The Knights defeated the Wildcats and ensured they’d return to the state tournament.

No. 2 Ocean Lakes 0, No. 3 Kempsville 0 (OL wins 4-3 in PKS)

Senior goalkeeper Marlie Smith made two clutch saves during penalty kicks for the Dolphins. The game-winning penalty kick was scored by senior Chloe McCall. Ocean Lakes will host No. 1 Kellam on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., then will go to the state playoffs.

Class 5 Region B

Semifinals

No. 1 Maury 5, No. 5 Woodside 0

Zareya Owens logged a brace in a shutout for the Commodores at Powhatan Field as they ensured a state tournament berth. Sol McGhee, Ella White and Gracyn Burhop rounded out the scoring. No. 1 Maury will compete in the tournament final at 5 p.m. Friday against Menchville.

No. 3 Menchville 5, No. 2 Nansemond River 1

Maddie Leach and Alyssa Ware each scored twice for the Monarchs, and Leach also provided an assist. Menchville will play No. 1 Maury on Friday at Powhatan Field for the regional championship, then will head to the state quarterfinals.

Class 4 Region A

Semifinals

No. 1 Jamestown 3, No. 4 Smithfield 0

The Eagles blanked the Packers and will head to the state tournament.

No. 3 Warhill 4, No. 2 Gloucester 0

The Lions eliminated the Dukes in a shutout. Warhill and Jamestown will compete on Thursday at 7 p.m. for the Class 4 Region A championship before both go to the state quarterfinals.

Class 3 Region A

No. 1 Lafayette 6, No. 4 Tabb 0

The Rams breezed past the Tigers for a state bid and will face the winner of No. 3 New Kent at No. 2 York on Thursday in the regional final.

No. 1 Poquoson 9, No. 2 King William 0

Brynn Groseth led the Islanders with a hat trick and three assists as they breezed into the state tournament. Makayla Goodson also recorded three goals. Madison Denoncourt, Anabelle Simmons and Kayla Gill all scored once.

Boys tennis

Class 5 Region A

Final

No. 1 Hickory 5, No. 2 Ocean Lakes 2

The Hawks repeated as region champs, taking a 4-0 lead in singles on First Colonial’s courts and clinching their triumph when brothers Parker and Spencer Dudley posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles.

Parker Dudley (6-1, 6-1 at line 3), Spencer Dudley (6-0, 6-2 at 4), Will Katchmark (6-3, 7-5 at 2) and Ethan Schneider (2-6, 6-4, 1-0 [10-2] at 5) gave Hickory a commanding lead.

Wins by the Dolphins’ Malav Shah (6-2, 6-2 at 6) and Josh Bakhshi (6-4, 2-6, 1-0 [10-7] at 1) extended the match to doubles.

Hickory will play host to Granby in a state quarterfinal Friday. Ocean Lakes will travel to undefeated Maury.

Class 2 Region A

Final

Bruton 5, Poquoson 0

Christoph Schweitzer (6-0, 6-0 at 1), Talien Barnes (6-1, 6-2 at 2), Simphiwe Matibini (6-0, 6-0 at 3), Fernando Moreno (6-0, 6-3 at 4) and Bryson Jones (6-0, 6-0 at 5) recorded singles wins for the Panthers as they captured the Class 2 Region A championship.

Class 5 Region B

Individual

Maury junior John Felts earned a region triple crown at Huntington Park. He defeated fellow Commodore Manolo Angeles 6-2, 6-1, then joined him to beat Menchville’s Owen Balingit and Edouard Duparcmeur 6-1, 6-3 for the doubles title.

Felts will play in the state singles semifinals June 13 at Huntington Park, then join Angeles that day for a doubles semi.

Girls tennis

Class 5 Region A

Final

No. 3 Ocean Lakes 5, No. 4 Cox 1

The Dolphins’ victors were Sophia Tanenggee (6-0, 6-0 at 2), Kasia Skurzak (6-1, 6-3 at 3), Shreya Behl (6-1, 6-0 at 4) and Samara Desy (7-5, 6-4 at 5) before the clincher, Caroline Jackson (6-2, 6-1 at 6) to capture the regional championship. No. 1 Ava Rassool earned Cox’s win, 6-0, 6-0.

Cox No. 2 player Valentine Renault was out of the lineup because she was taking exams in Washington, Falcons coach Beth Absher said. They hope she’ll be back Friday, when the Falcons will play Menchville in a state quarterfinal in Newport News, while Ocean Lakes will play host to Maury.

Class 5 Region B

Individual

Senior Tori Epps, who previously led Menchville to this year’s region team crown, won her third consecutive region singles title with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Granby’s Ariana Pazos-Del Aguila at Huntington Park in Newport News.

Epps took a “triple crown” by adding the doubles first-place medals when she and Erin Pridgen edged Pazos-Del Aguila and Sai Bhasin 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3) in the doubles final.

Epps will compete in the state singles semifinals June 13 at Huntington Park, then join Pridgen that day for a doubles semi.
